About
Chew Valley Web is a small business with a fresh approach to web services. Based in the Chew Valley, Somerset UK , I enjoy helping enterprises get the most from a small commerical website. There are some related examples listed at the bottom of this page.
Promoting Businesses
I run CVW because I enjoy meeting new businesses and trying to understand how they tick in order to use my skills, both technical and promotional, to grow using the World Wide Web.
I have always been involved in small business, including my own, since leaving full time education. As a convert to the amazing powers of the internet for both the customer and business, I am always keen to pass on the things I have learned over the years.
Building Websites
Whilst I can be a bit of a techie, I found that my real interest in publishing on the web was centered around the art of creating websites that were as effective for the owner as possible. Creating a website requires a good deal of techincal knowledge . Hundreds of web developers have emerged from education, armed with all the latest programming skills. What is in shorter supply in web development is an understanding of you, the client, and what your business needs so that the finished website actually finds more customers, gets more business.
Taming Search Engines
During my time building web sites, I have gained experience in how to present your business to not only the human eye but, almost as importantly, the search engines. This means that all of the sites that Chew Valley Web produce are highly optimised to be search engine friendly, get better search rankings and recieve more traffic. The buzzword for this is Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) and at the moment there are any number of companies offering SEO services of mixed quality. Chew Valley Web can really help you get better search engine rankings with every level of service, even on a tight budget.
Real Service
Web designers usually advertise themselves with technical skills such as XHTML, Flash, PHP, CSS and other stuff that sound complex. Thats fine and I can do all of those things too…..
I believe that a lot of web design projects start from the wrong end. They are led by grahpic designers and database programmers who all want to use the latest tools to make their sites stand out in the web design world. They want to try out the latest fashion or technology without regard to the actual needs of the site. A technical whizz can usually find a convincing reason to make your business pay for that extra stuff.
I am more interested in you reaching more customers effectively.
Thanks for stopping by. You can contact me at Chew Valley Web to discuss any aspect of your website. I always enjoy meeting new people.

Recent Small Business Clients
Here are some recently completed projects that demonstrate how it is possible for your business to gain from the smallest of outlay. These projects all had small budget and I used my knowledge of effective web strategies to make sure that only the essential elements were worked on. Work by Chew Valley Web paid for itself within months, sometimes weeks.
- Chew Valley Therapies - This Osteopathic and Therapies practice had and extremely limited budget but felt they needed a web presence. I created an extremely simply site which is useful to their clients and, more importantly, brings web traffic and new customers through the search engines: Osteopath+Chew+Valley
- Rail Photoprints - A railway photographer with 1000’s of images to sell online, I advised on and customised a commercially available software and was able to give complete control to the shop owner. Rail Photoprints continues to enjoy good sales of images all over the world. Nearly 50% of all visitors arrive from search engines as a direct result of the optimisation work I performed on the shop software.
- Arne Herbs - A specialist plant nursery, Arne Herbs already had the basis of a website and a limited budget for improvements. Working with a brief to increase customer enquiries via the web, I took the existing infrastructure and increased search engine rankings and resulting traffic which in turn led to more enquiries. Arne Herbs were so please with the results, they recently returned for some “more magic, please!” The site has gone from a just few visitors per day to 1000’s of page views per month.
- Bright Green Design Ltd - A specialist in 3D visualisation and CGI artists impressions, the Bright Green website was not visible to search engines and the code was broken. A rebuild with a bit of spring cleaning plus some search engine optimisation, Bright Green now appears in search results for all their keyphrases and the website is boosting exposure to new clients.
